Fort San Pedro

Fuerza de San Pedro is a military defence structure, built by Spanish and Indigenous Cebuano labourers under the command of Spanish conquistador, Miguel López de Legazpi and the Spanish Government in Cebu. It is located in the Pier area, Cebu City in what is now Plaza Indepedencia.

The Fort is the "oldest, smallest and well preserved colonial fort" in the Philippines which occupy a land "area of 2,2025 square metres". It was first constructed in log structures and earth in 1565 for protection from violent sieges from the native cebuanos and Muslim pirates on the area. The fort was then developed , upgraded and constructed using hard stone, which made the surrounding walls stronger and tougher. It stretches "8 metres thick with high walls of 20 metres and a front entrance towering 30 metres high". The fort was finally finished in 1738 after many years of refurbishing and developments.

These days the fort is made into a museum. Inside, the fort houses the legacies of the Spanish Government with well preserved Spanish artifacts such as: documents written in Spanish, Paintings, Sculptures, cannons, Chapel, prison dungeons, living rooms, bedrooms, school rooms and oasis garden. A large statue of Legazpi and Antonio Pigafetta is erected outside the fort. The museum also contains old coins dating back to the time of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines.

SM’s expansion wing to copy Mall of Asia

SM City Cebu aims to target the upper class market with its expansion building dubbed, the Northwing.

Marissa Fernan, SM Prime Holdings vice president for marketing said the 10.9—hectare Northwing, which will replicate the ambience of the SM Mall of Asia in Manila, is scheduled to open in May next year.

“We are very excited. SM will try to exude the same kind of ambience in the Mall of Asia in Cebu. The interiors of the Northwing will be done by a Singapore-based designer. SM will be putting up features not seen in Cebu yet,” she told a press conference last Friday.

With regard to the hotel constructed by SM next to the mall in Cebu City, she said the Sy’s are constantly looking for partners willing to infuse investment to complete the hotel’s construction.

Fernan denied the rumor that the reason for the stoppage of the hotel’s construction is the mall management’s misunderstanding with the contractor due to errors in construction.

Cebu Business Park forms quick response crisis team

Cebu Business Park forms quick response crisis teamCONSCIOUS of the need to upgrade their crisis response capabilities, firms inside the Cebu Business Park and Ayala Center Cebu are committing their security people to form a quick response force for emergencies.
Thirty-two security guards, coming from various security agencies, were sent to the Emergency Rescue Force (ERF) by their retaining establishments. They underwent firearms proficiency training at the Casey Gun Club Firing Range yesterday.
Engineer Frederick Ygnacio property manager of the Innove IT Plaza, one of the firms supporting the ERF, said the training is the first of a series that will also include first aid and firefighting.
"The aim is to have a unit that is ready to augment the capability of the existing security force of each individual establishment," he said.
The ERF's creation was supervised by Dominador Rey and Maximiano Sumaoy, Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) security manager and security consultant respectively.

Training costs
CHI, which manages both the Ayala Center mall and the Cebu Business Park, is helping defray part of the training costs.
The ERF was formed a month after the mock high-rise building hostage rescue mission that operatives from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Joint Special Operations Command (J-Soc) conducted inside the Innove IT Plaza.
In that exercise, a group of armed terrorists hijacked the Innove building, and holed themselves up on the 12th floor with two hostages.
The building's security force implemented its quick response protocol, and sent out a distress signal. It then isolated the 12th floor by sealing off access to other areas and evacuating everybody else.
Two "stacks" from the J-Soc were immediately dispatched and, onboard a fast-attack chopper and under the protective coverage of snipers stationed atop adjacent high-rise buildings, "fast-roped" down to the building's roof before heading to the 12th floor.
There, they engaged the "terrorists" in a firefight that led to the mock rescue. (KNR)

Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño

Cebu is predominantly Roman Catholic. Other religious minorities include Protestant churches of Assemblies of God, Word for the World, Iglesia ni Cristo, Jesus Miracle Crusade, Jehovah's Witnesses, God's Kingdom, the Baptists, a Reformed Baptist, The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (Mormons), Taoists, Muslims, etc.

The patron of Cebu is the Santo Niño de Cebu, the Holy Child Jesus The statue is housed in the country's oldest church, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Soon, the patron was changed to the Lady of Guadalupe to conform to canonical practice of having patron saints instead of Jesus Christ himself.

According to historical accounts, the Santo Niño was given by the Portuguese sea captain and explorer Ferdinand Magellan to the wife of the chief of Cebu. That act is depicted in Cebu's largest, most popular and largest cultural event, the Sinulog where street-dancing and loud drum beats preceded by a holy Mass is the main attraction.

Magellan's Cross

Magellan's Cross is a large Christian cross planted by Portuguese and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippinesin 1521.

This cross is housed in a small chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street (Magallanes being the Spanish name of Magellan), just in front of the city hall of Cebu City. A sign outside claims that the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross that is found in the center of this chapel. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for sourvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers. Some people, however, believe that the original cross had been destroyed or had disappeared after Magellan's death, and the cross is a replica that was planted there by the Spaniards after they successfully colonized the Philippines.

Magellan's Cross is a symbol of Cebu City and the chapel's image can be found in its city seal. It is also seen as the symbol of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.
